A “COUNTY FIRE AUTHORITY”– WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR DEERHORN VALLEY AND ITS RESIDENTS?

The County is moving to bring rural fire departments under their jurisdiction.

Chief David Nissen and Rural Fire Protection District are hosting a “Hometown Meeting” to give citizens first-hand information about the proposed move and answer question.

Recently the East County Magazine has run several articles about the move, which has fire departments lining up on both sides.  Our Rural Fire District Board has also sent a letter to every resident, and a link is included below:

SUPERVISORS TO DECIDE TUESDAY WHETHER TO MERGE 5 FIRE AGENCIES

January 24, 2011 (San Diego) — The County Board of Supervisors will decide tomorrow whether to merge five fire agencies into the San Diego County Fire Authority. A hearing is set for Tuesday, January 25, at 9:30 in the Board Chamber at the County Administration Center, 1600 Pacific Highway in downtown San Diego.
The County Fire Authority was created in 2008 when the County united a handful of rural fire agencies with a goal of creating a stronger, more efficient agency that will eventually serve over half of the geographic area in our region, including unincorporated areas throughout San Diego’s East County, where the devastating wildfires in 2003 and 2007 began.
RURAL FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT [Currently operates Deerhorn Valley and 13 other rural stations]
The County of San Diego is asking the San Diego Rural Fire Protection District (the “District”) to decide if it will continue to operate as an independent fire district or dissolve and become part of the new County Fire Authority agency (“CFA”). This is the third and final phase of the County’s plan to consolidate the fire protection services in the rural areas of San Diego County that began after the fires of 2003 and 2007.
