Two San Diego-area athletes – Kellie Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS) and Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) – played key roles as Pepperdine won the 2014 AVCA Sand Volleyball National Championships today in Gulf Shores, Ala.
Second-ranked Pepperdine defeated #4 Florida State (4-1) in the quarterfinals on Friday, top-ranked USC (3-2) in the semifinals on Saturday morning and Florida State again (3-2) in the championship on Saturday afternoon.
Playing at the #1 position with partner Kellie Woolever, Larsen won two of her three matches over the two days, including a three-set victory in the championship match against the Seminoles that evened the score at 2-2.
Playing at the #5 position with Sophie Asprey, Adelhelm also won two of her three matches, including the one in the championship match against the Seminoles.
Larsen will also be competing in the pairs national championship tournament on Sunday.
